The small screen better accommodates this kind of concentrated tragedy; in a cinema, the story becomes like those support-group sessions the couple attends: The film does achieve moments of catharsis, but it can be heavy going. Becca tries to eradicate all signs of her son, while Howie reaches out to family and friends.
The group sessions barely help. Finally, Becca reaches out and to the most surprising person. She happens to see and then makes contact with the high school student Miles Teller whose car struck her son. What makes John Cameron Mitchell's film so interesting is that it bravely investigates what you say then. I know all this sounds like a mournful dirge, but in fact, "Rabbit Hole" is entertaining and surprisingly amusing, under the circumstances.
The film is in a better state of mind than its characters. Its humor comes, as the best humor does, from an acute observation of human nature. We have known people something like this.
We smile in recognition. I was interested in Nicole Kidman's performance. I've always believed her to be talented, since all those years ago when she and Thandie Newton starred in the wonderful " Flirting " Age will only be an asset to her.
Here she plays the character who changes; she's the balance point of the story. Howie has things that happen in his life, but he essentially remains the same man. A few moments work too hard to evoke emotion -- the scene in the supermarket, for instance, when Becca is shocked at her own display of rage -- but those are, thankfully, the exceptions. Rather than provide audiences with the expected portraits of anguish, it aims for an unvarnished and messy truth -- difficult to categorize, stunning to watch.
Families can talk about how the movie tackles the subjects of grief and loss. Does it seem different from other movies? What is the movie's ultimate message? Do you consider the characters to be positive role models? Why or why not? Why do Becca and Howie have trouble supporting each other through their grief?
