What do breathers do on valve covers

Stock SBCs had a breather in the oil fill along with a road draft tube in the rear on early ones, and a pcv valve in the oil fill and a breather in a valve cover on the later ones. Its a ventilation "system" that needs flow from one end or side of the motor to the other to effectively work.

As the engine quickly warms up, the pistons and rings, along with all the other components, begin to tighten up in the cylinder, and the available power increases. The optimum operating temperature for maximum expansion is degrees F. When an engine exceeds about degrees F, the expansion becomes dangerous, as the parts lose all their clearance and are in danger of seizing.

An engine also must deal with wear as the mileage builds. As the rings on the pistons wear, the engine begins to experience blow by. This happens when the rings are not tight enough to contain the explosions within the cylinders and the pressure passes the rings into the oil pan and block.

Herein lies the reason and function of the valve cover breathers. The blow by builds up in the oil pan as the combustion passes the rings. As it fills the block, it must be evacuated. If there is no way for this blow by to escape, the pressure would increase to the point that it would blow out gaskets in the engine. Yes, the breather is still necessary. Similarly, what is a breather delete? The only purpose of a breather filter is to let clean air be drawn through the block.

The Breather Valve is a protection device mounted on a nozzle opening on the top of a fixed roof atmospheric storage tank. Its primary purpose is to protect the tank against rupturing or imploding. As the liquid level lowers, the vapor space pressure is reduced to below atmospheric pressure. As the name implies, a valve cover is just a cover ; its function is to protect the innards from the outside elements.

It has no direct impact on engine performance unless the original valve cover was damaged or cracked to begin with. The thought behind the breather is that you are supposed to get more fresh air flow down into the crankcase from the valve cover. This increases the cycle of oil vapor flow out of the crankcase. The added fresh air displaces the oil vapors in the crankcase with the assistance from the IM vacuum sucking it out. Can I replace my PCV valve with a breather?

You can replace the breather on the passenger side. That's not a big deal. That's all that hose to the air cleaner does is draw in air. You do want to keep the PCV valve. Why is there oil coming out of my valve cover breather? If you put a valve in both sides, you block crankcase ventilation and cause excessive pressure or vacuum in the engine.

You can expect lots of oil leaks and gasket failures. Make sure you have the PCV valve facing the correct direction.
