We apologize for the inconvenience. Once adult fleas start feeding on their new walking hosts the female fleas start making eggs within 2 days. Adults lay their mm, white, ovoid eggs in their hosts hair coat.
Adults can lay eggs per day. These eggs then fall to the ground and hatch within days. Some flea preventative treatments sterilize the female fleas and help to break the flea life cycle. Eggs hatch to reveal equally unappealing larvae. These larvae live in the environment.
They tend to prefer low light areas with a limited amount of foot traffic. Carpets and beds make excellent homes for these creatures. Over weeks they will spin cocoons or pupae, often out of carpet fibres. This life stage is susceptible to multiple different flea medications and is an integral part of the flea life cycle to eliminate when combating a flea infestation. The final stage is the most difficult stage to eliminate. The flea pupae are incredibly resistant to freezing, drying out, and flea medications.
This stage can survive and hibernate for up to 9 months in some cases. In another weeks the pupae will hatch when stimulated by a pets body heat, motion, and breath CO2. The hatched fleas will often find a host within minutes. There is an oral chewable tablet called Bravecto which is administered once every 3 months, as well as a couple different topicals which are applied monthly such as Revolution or Advantage Multi.
We recommend that you talk to your veterinarian to find out which form is right for your dog. Van Isle Veterinary Hospital is super excited to be hosting our 4th annual cupcake day fundraiser!

Although restrictions have been lifted, our health and safety protocols have not. It is important we continue to follow the guidelines set out by Worksafe BC and social distance our large team as much as possible. This means although we can offer these elective services, we are doing much fewer during the day than we were pre-COVID.
As of July 7, , we are excited to invite our clients back into the exam rooms! We have put some important safety measures in place to help keep our clients and our team safe. The use of our online store for easy ordering, payment and delivery of our pet's food, flea and tick medications. During the first 8 weeks of COVID, we were operating as a hour facility to better serve our community and to maintain social distancing within our team. Once again, prevention is the key. Adulticides solutions that kill adult fleas are the best for this.
Repellants, insecticides, and regular use of insect growth regulator can help in preventing a flea disaster in indoor and outdoor environments. Ticks, another blood sucking parasite, are very similar to fleas in that that enjoy warm, moist environments, have a similar life cycle and are vectors that attach themselves to other animals and spread disease.
These include relapsing fever, tularemia, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, anaplasmosis and last but not least, Lyme disease. In Lyme disease, following the tick bite, the infection spreads to the joints, heart, nervous system and skin sites distal to the bite via the bloodstream.
Scarborough veterinarian Dr. Clayton Greenway says Lyme disease is on the rise thanks to climate change and urban sprawl and ticks are hanging around all year long.
This is why it is important to keep on the look out not only for your pet but yourself as well. A brisk walk or an afternoon meander is not as innocent as you may think, especially during tick season. When you go for walks watch out for low hanging branches, tall grass and wooded areas. Back from your walk? Time to check the fur for those unwanted pesky pests. If caught early, you can remove them carefully with a pair of tweezers. It takes 24 hours for the disease to be spread from the tick to the host, so early detection is important.
